Smokey – Recovered & Adopted

Smokey was rescued from a burning apartment complex by the Houston Fire Department, suffering severe smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. When he arrived at the shelter, he couldn’t stand, walk, or see, and his life hung by a thread.

This brave 10-month-old, 20 lb pup faced neurological deficits, lung damage, a broken femur, and two foreign objects in his stomach. He underwent two surgeries, one to stabilize his broken leg and another to remove the foreign bodies, and spent weeks in critical care at Texas A&M Small Animal Hospital with a team of neurologists, orthopedics, internists, and ophthalmologists.

Even with all these challenges, Smokey’s spirit never wavered. He loves to give kisses, has a heart full of affection, and is showing improvement every day. While he is still neurologically blind, he is regaining his mobility and adjusting to a world without sight.

Smokey is now in a medical foster home, receiving physical therapy and endless love, proving that resilience and hope can overcome even the darkest beginnings.
