Elmo was turned into the shelter by his owner who requested he be euthanized due to his injuries from being hit by a car. We took Elmo to the ER for immediate care and assessment. Elmo had multiple pelvic fractures and sacroiliac dislocations. He cried out in pain when he tried to move.
He had pelvic surgery, which lasted for 3 hours. Then, complications arose, and Elmo had to be rushed back to the ER. He had a CT scan and a second 3-hour pelvic surgery. The poor quality of his bone condition, the old age of the injury, and his small size all added to the complexity of his surgery and he was in critical care for several days.
Elmo’s struggle continued, as he then developed a life-threatening bone infection which could only be cured through IV antibiotics with careful monitoring of kidney function. Thus, his hospital stay was much longer than anticipated.
On the positive side, Elmo’s pain subsided and he was finally able to walk and play again like a normal dog!
